Hear the difference

The same Finnish sentence, twice. Aurora is a Finnish speaker; Zoe shortens the doubled letters and stresses the wrong syllables - and in Finnish a sound held too briefly is simply a different word.

The Finnish voices

All 7 run on the ElevenLabs tiers: Enhanced at 110 credits / 1,000 characters (≈ $0.23 per minute of speech) and Premium at 160 (≈ $0.33) for the most natural result. The Standard tier reads Finnish too at 50 credits, and for most languages it has native voices of its own. Every clip downloads as MP3. Browse the voice library →

Why a native Finnish voice matters

Finnish looks easy to read aloud, because every letter is pronounced and always the same way. What makes it hard is length. A doubled letter is held twice as long, and the difference is the word itself: tuli is fire, tuuli is wind and tulli is customs; kansa is a people, kanssa means with. English has no habit of holding a consonant, so a foreign voice shortens them, and the result is a stream of near-misses. Stress is the other rule: always the first syllable, with a lighter beat further into long compounds such as käsikirjoitus, which the language builds freely.

The vowels add a third layer. y is the rounded front vowel of German ü, ä is the a of cat, and vowel harmony keeps ä, ö and y apart from a, o and u inside a word. All seven voices are Finnish speakers of standard Finnish; Miika is from Helsinki. Christoffer is a steady, hopeful voice and the most used Finnish voice in the library, Jaakko a serious audiobook narrator, Miika diplomatic and even. Among the women, Aurora is cheerful and friendly for narration and conversation, Soili calm and neutral, Kaisa strong and authoritative, Sini bright and quick.

Frequently asked questions

Does it hold long vowels and double consonants?

Yes - this is where a native voice earns its place. tuli, tuuli and tulli, or kansa and kanssa, come out as the different words they are, because doubled letters are held for their full length.

What about long compound words?

Compounds keep the main stress on the first syllable, with a lighter beat on the first syllable of each later part, the way a Finnish speaker reads them. Very long or unusual compounds are read most naturally when spelled exactly as they should be.

Does it read spoken-style Finnish or Finland Swedish?

It reads what is written: text in the spoken style, with mä and sä, comes out in that style, and standard written Finnish comes out standard. Finland Swedish is a different language - the Swedish voices are from Sweden, and none speaks with a Finland Swedish accent.

How much does Finnish text to speech cost?

Native voices cost 110 credits per 1,000 characters on Enhanced or 160 on Premium. A 1,000-character paragraph is roughly a minute of speech - about $0.23 on Enhanced at the $5 pack rate. The first clip is free.
