Why a native Romanian voice matters
Romanian is a Romance language with two vowels its relatives do not have. ă is a schwa, the sound at the end of casă, and â and î are a single central vowel written two ways depending on where it falls in the word - the sound in român and în. Neither exists in Italian, Spanish or French, so a voice that generalizes from the rest of the family reads casa for casă and roman for român, changing the words. ș and ț are the consonant equivalent, and they take a comma below rather than a cedilla, which matters when text is copied between systems that substitute one for the other.
The practical problem is that a great deal of Romanian online is written without diacritics at all - sa for să, tara for țară - and a voice has to reconstruct them from context. Native voices do. Does it read text written without diacritics?
Yes, and it is a real need rather than a nicety - much of Romanian online is typed as sa, tara, stiu. The voices reconstruct ă, â, î, ș and ț from context, though text that keeps its diacritics is always read more reliably.
Does it handle ș and ț with a comma below?
Yes, and also the cedilla versions that some systems substitute (ş, ţ). Both are read as the Romanian sounds rather than as a plain s and t.
Is it Romanian or Moldovan?
Standard Romanian, the register used in broadcasting in Romania. Moldovan is the same language, so the voices are usable there, but the accent they produce is the Romanian standard rather than a Chisinau one.
