The same Italian sentence, twice. Violetta is Italian; Aria reads Italian with an English accent - double consonants and vowel endings are the giveaway.

The Italian voices

All 7 run on the ElevenLabs tiers: Enhanced at 90 credits / 1,000 characters (≈ $0.19 per minute of speech) and Premium at 180 (≈ $0.37) for the most natural result. The OpenAI Standard tier reads Italian too at 50 credits, with 6 delivery styles. Browse all 106 voices →

Why a native Italian voice matters

Italian is a language of precise lengths: double consonants change meaning (pala vs palla), and every final vowel is fully voiced, never swallowed. English-accented TTS shortens the doubles and reduces the endings - two small errors that make every sentence subtly wrong. Native voices keep the doubles long, the vowels open, and the melodic rise-and-fall phrasing that Italian speech is famous for.

Six of the seven speak standard Italian, the register of national broadcasting, natural to listeners from Milan to Palermo. Violetta and Samanta are expressive narrative female voices, Linda a younger, cheerful one. Marco is a seasoned narrator, Andy a warm and mature male voice, Giovanni younger and more conversational. Giusy is the exception: a Sicilian-coloured voice built for sales and customer support, where sounding local beats sounding neutral. For published content, standard Italian is still almost always the right default.

Frequently asked questions

Does it respect double consonants and stress?

Yes - geminate consonants are held (palla is not pala) and lexical stress lands correctly, including on words where it is distinctive, like ancora vs ancóra.

Is it standard Italian or a regional accent?

Six of the seven native voices speak standard Italian - the neutral broadcast register understood everywhere in Italy. Giusy carries a Sicilian colour, useful for conversational and support content aimed at the south. Roman and Neapolitan voices are not offered.

Can it read mixed Italian and English?

Yes - English names and terms embedded in Italian text are pronounced as English rather than italianised.

How much does Italian text to speech cost?

Native voices cost 90 credits per 1,000 characters on Enhanced or 180 on Premium; OpenAI Standard reads Italian at 50. A 1,000-character paragraph is roughly one minute of speech - about $0.19 on Enhanced at the $5 pack rate. No subscription.
