Why a native German voice matters
German is unforgiving to foreign-accented TTS: umlauts flatten (schön becomes shane), the ch in ich turns into a k, and long compounds like Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung fall apart mid-word. A voice trained on German speech gets these right by default - including the clipped final consonants and the falling sentence melody that make German sound German.
All eight native voices speak standard German (Hochdeutsch), which reads naturally to listeners from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Susi and Lea are conversational female voices; Ava and Luisa are younger, one bright and friendly, one calm and patient, and Carola is the sharp, precise voice for tutorials and course material. Does it pronounce ä, ö, ü and ß correctly?
Yes. The native voices are German speakers, so umlauts, ß and German-specific clusters like sch and pf come out right without phonetic tricks. Long compound words are read as one word with natural internal stress.
Is it Hochdeutsch or a regional dialect?
Standard German (Hochdeutsch), the register used in broadcasting - natural for audiences in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Speecho does not offer Bavarian, Austrian or Swiss German dialect voices.
Which German voice should I pick?
