Hear the two accents

The same Dutch sentence, twice. Ruth speaks Netherlands Dutch - the hard, scraping g of the Randstad. Petra is Flemish - a softer g, rounder vowels and a gentler melody. Dutch and Flemish listeners place each other in one word.

Petra - Flemish (Belgium)

The Dutch voices

All 5 run on the ElevenLabs tiers: Enhanced at 90 credits / 1,000 characters (≈ $0.19 per minute of speech) and Premium at 180 (≈ $0.37) for the most natural result. The OpenAI Standard tier reads Dutch too at 50 credits, with 6 delivery styles. Browse all 106 voices →

Why a native Dutch voice matters

Dutch has sounds that foreign TTS rarely gets right: the harsh g and ch, the ui and eu diphthongs that exist in almost no other language, and the final devoicing that turns hond into hont. An English-accented voice softens the g into an English h or k and flattens the diphthongs into plain vowels - a Dutch listener hears it in the first word. Native voices also keep Dutch word order intonation, where the verb at the end of a clause takes the sentence melody with it.

The roster is split deliberately down the Netherlands/Belgium line, because Dutch speakers hear the difference instantly and it changes who the content sounds like it is for. Ruth is a warm, dynamic narrator from the Netherlands, Melanie a younger, engaging storyteller and the most-used Dutch voice in the library, Serge a professional male narrator. Petra and Hans are Flemish: Petra energetic and clear for conversational content, Hans a calm professional narrator. For material aimed at both markets, Netherlands Dutch is the more common default in international media.

Frequently asked questions

Is it Netherlands Dutch or Flemish?

Both. Ruth, Melanie and Serge speak Netherlands Dutch; Petra and Hans are Flemish (Belgium). The picker tags each voice, so you choose rather than accept whatever the tool defaults to.

Does it pronounce the Dutch g and ui correctly?

Yes - the g/ch fricative and the ui, ij and eu diphthongs are native sounds for these voices. The Flemish voices use the softer southern g, which is part of what distinguishes them.

Can it read mixed Dutch and English text?

Yes, and Dutch content is full of it. English words and brand names inside Dutch sentences are pronounced as English rather than being read through Dutch spelling rules.

How much does Dutch text to speech cost?

Native voices cost 90 credits per 1,000 characters on Enhanced or 180 on Premium; OpenAI Standard reads Dutch at 50. A 1,000-character paragraph is roughly one minute of speech - about $0.19 on Enhanced at the $5 pack rate. No subscription.
