Hear the difference
The same Swedish sentence, twice. Sanna is a Swedish speaker; Aria reads Swedish with English vowels and a flat melody - Swedish has a pitch pattern inside the word, and without it the language loses its shape.

Why a native Swedish voice matters
Swedish carries a pitch accent, a rise and fall inside the word itself rather than across the sentence. Anden with one pattern is the duck, with the other it is the spirit, and the spelling is identical. English has nothing equivalent, so an English-trained voice simply flattens it, which is why foreign-accented Swedish sounds monotone to Swedes even when every vowel is right. The sj-sound is the other famous hurdle: the consonant at the start of sjö, stjärna and skön has no English counterpart at all, and voices approximate it with sh, which lands somewhere between wrong and comic.
The vowels do their share too. å, ä and ö are distinct sounds rather than decorated versions of a and o, u is further forward than any English u, and the soft k before front vowels turns kött into something an English reader would never guess from the spelling. All four voices are Swedish speakers. Sanna is a calm narrator, widely used for long-form reading, and Elin a neutral, even voice for informational content. Adam is a confident male narrator for documentary and advertising, Bengt a calm one that suits audiobooks and explainers.

Frequently asked questions
Does it get the pitch accent right?
Yes - it is the difference between a Swedish voice and a foreign one reading Swedish. Word pairs that differ only in pitch, like anden and anden, are resolved from context rather than flattened into a single reading.
What about the sj-sound and soft k?
Both are native to these voices. sjö, stjärna and skön get the real sj-sound rather than an English sh, and kött, kyrka and köpa take the soft k that the spelling does not show.
Is it rikssvenska or a regional accent?
Standard Swedish - the broadcasting register. Three of the four voices are Stockholm speakers. Finland Swedish, Scanian and the other regional varieties are not offered as separate options.
How much does Swedish text to speech cost?
Native voices cost 90 credits per 1,000 characters on Enhanced or 180 on Premium. A 1,000-character paragraph is roughly a minute of speech - about $0.19 on Enhanced at the $5 pack rate. No subscription.
