Setting the pace in words, not pixels
Most browser teleprompters give you a speed slider that means nothing - a number from 1 to 10 that scrolls faster or slower depending on how big your text happens to be. This one asks how fast you talk instead. It measures your script, works out how far it has to travel, and scrolls exactly fast enough to finish in that time. Change the font size and the pace stays the same; change the pace and the time to the end changes with it.
A good starting point is 130 words per minute for a considered read and 160 for something upbeat. Does my script get uploaded?
No. The text stays in your browser. It is saved to this device only, in local storage, so it is still there when you come back - and clearing your browser data removes it.
What does mirror mode do?
It flips the text horizontally. Hardware teleprompters reflect a screen off angled glass in front of the lens, and that reflection reverses the text - so the screen has to show it reversed to arrive the right way round. If you are just reading off a laptop next to the camera, leave it off.
Can I use it on a phone or tablet?
Yes, and a phone on a small tripod beside the lens is the most common setup. Tap the text to pause and resume, drag up or down to move through the script. On iPhone the prompter fills the tab rather than going truly fullscreen, because Safari does not offer fullscreen there.
How do I pick the right pace?
Conversational speech runs around 130 to 150 words per minute; presenters and adverts push 160 to 180. Set it, read the first paragraph, and adjust with the arrow keys while it runs - the estimated time updates as you go.
Can I record video at the same time?
Not in the same tab - use your camera or phone as normal and let the prompter run on a second screen or device. A browser page cannot both scroll a prompter and record your camera reliably enough to trust with a take.
Why does the countdown matter?
It gives you three seconds to look at the lens instead of the mouse, and it leaves a clean handle at the head of the take. Turn it off if you are prompting live rather than recording.
Is my script still here tomorrow?
Yes, on the same device and browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it will not follow you to another computer.
