Why a browser recorder instead of an app
Most of the time you need a recording, you need it now: a thought before it goes, a phone call on speaker, a lecture that started two minutes ago. Installing something is the part that makes you miss it. This starts recording one click after the page loads, and hands you a normal audio file at the end - nothing to sign up for and nothing to uninstall afterwards.
The recording never leaves your device, which also means we cannot do anything with it for you here. When you want the words rather than the audio, upload the file to Speecho and get a transcript with speaker labels, subtitles and a summary - the first 15 minutes are free. Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. The audio is captured by your browser and held in memory in this tab. There is no upload, no account, and nothing for us to see - you can put the device in airplane mode after the page loads and it still records.
What file format do I get?
Whatever your browser encodes natively: Chrome, Edge and Firefox produce Opus audio in a WebM container, and Safari produces AAC in an MP4 container (saved as .m4a). Both play everywhere and both upload fine for transcription. MediaRecorder, the recording API browsers provide, cannot produce MP3 in any of them. A page can only hand you one by bundling an MP3 encoder, which this tool deliberately does not do - it would add weight for a format the recording works fine without. If you specifically need MP3, convert the downloaded file in your editor.
How long can I record?
There is no fixed limit, but the recording is held in memory until you download it, so very long sessions depend on your device. For anything over an hour, record in parts and download each one as you go.
Why does it ask for microphone permission?
The browser will not let any page reach a microphone without you allowing it, which is exactly right. The permission applies to this site in this browser and you can withdraw it at any time in the address bar or your browser settings.
It says permission was denied - how do I fix it?
Click the padlock or microphone icon in the address bar and allow microphone access for this site, then reload. On a phone, check that the browser itself is allowed to use the microphone in your system settings.
Can I record a phone or video call?
This records your microphone, so it captures your side of a call and anything coming out of your speaker. Recording other people usually requires their consent, and in some countries the consent of everyone on the call - check the rules where you are before you press record.
Can it record the audio playing on my computer?
No. A page can only reach your microphone, not your system audio. To capture what is playing, use your operating system or the recording feature of the app that is playing it.
How do I get the text of the recording?
Download the file, then upload it to Speecho. You get a transcript with timestamps and speaker labels, plus subtitles, a summary and translation if you want them. The first 15 minutes are free and there is no subscription.
What are the markers for?
They are timestamps you drop while recording - press M, or click a question from your list - so you can find the moment again afterwards. The times follow the recording rather than the clock, so pausing does not shift them: a marker at 12:03 is at 12:03 in the file. Download them as a text file next to the audio, then use them to jump around the transcript, or paste them into the chapter formatter as chapter titles.
