How do I add live captions to OBS?
Start a live session in Speecho, turn on the live link and copy the OBS overlay link. In OBS, add a Browser source, paste the URL and set its width and height to your canvas - 1920x1080 for most streams. The page has a transparent background, so only the captions show over your scene.
Do I need to install a plugin?
No. It is a browser source, which means a URL. Nothing is installed on your PC and nothing runs locally, so the same link works in OBS Studio, Streamlabs, vMix and anything else that can display a web page.
Can I change how the captions look?
Yes. Before copying the link you set the caption color, whether captions sit at the top or the bottom, how many lines stay on screen, the text outline, an optional dark band behind the text, and whether the Speecho mark shows in the corner. Your choices are baked into the link, so the overlay looks right the moment OBS loads it.
Can the captions be translated live?
Yes. Pick a language to translate into and the overlay shows the translation as you speak, with the original above it if you want both. The language can be changed mid-stream without restarting the session or touching OBS.
Can it caption game audio, a video or a guest on a call?
Anything the browser can hear. Use the microphone for your own voice, or switch the source to "Browser tab" to capture a call, a video or a webinar playing in a tab - your own mic can be mixed in so both sides get captioned. Tab capture needs Chrome or Edge on desktop.
What happens if my internet drops mid-stream?
Short outages are survivable. Speecho keeps listening, holds on to what is said while the connection is down and reconnects on its own, so the overlay picks up where it left off - including the words spoken during the gap. The offline time is not billed.
Is the transcript saved after the stream?
Yes - when you stop, the session lands in your history as a transcript you can download as text or SRT/VTT, summarize or share. Turn on "Keep audio" before going live and the recording is stored privately next to it for 90 days. Going on a break? Pause the session - the overlay link stays valid, nothing is lost, and paused time is not billed.
How much does it cost?
Live captions are billed by the second from your pay-as-you-go balance - the same credits as file transcription, from $0.83 per hour. There is no subscription, so a channel that streams twice a month pays for two streams.
