Quizlet to Anki converter (and any word list)

Paste a Quizlet export, an Anki export, a CSV or a word list typed any way you like, and get a file that Anki or Quizlet imports straight away, or a clean CSV. Numbering, stray spaces and duplicates go on the way. It all runs in your browser: the list is never uploaded.

How to export from Quizlet

  1. Open the set on quizlet.com while signed in.
  2. Click the three-dot button next to the set and choose Export.
  3. Keep "Tab" between term and definition and "New line" between rows, then click Copy text.
  4. Paste the text into the box above. A comma or semicolon setting works too.

How to import into Anki

  1. Choose Anki above, give the deck a name and click Download.
  2. In Anki on your computer, open File > Import (Ctrl+Shift+I, on a Mac Cmd+Shift+I) and pick the file.
  3. Anki 2.1.54 and later read the separator, note type and deck from the file itself: check the preview and click Import.
  4. In an older Anki, set the type to Basic, choose the deck and keep "Fields separated by: Tab".

What it fixes

Cards that speak

A word you can read is only half learned until you have heard it said. Speecho voices a list like this one card by card: the word in a native voice of its language, a short pause, then the translation in a voice of yours, one MP3 per card, with a CSV that puts the sound on every Anki card. See how flashcard audio works, or build a ready Anki deck from a CSV.

Questions

Does it keep a third column, like an example sentence?

Yes. Columns after the second go along as they are, into the Anki file and the CSV. On Anki's import screen, map them to a field of the note type or leave them out. Quizlet takes two sides, so the Quizlet text has only the term and the definition.

Can it bring pictures across?

No, only text. Quizlet's export has no pictures, and images in an Anki export are left out. Sound references such as [sound:apple.mp3] stay in a file for Anki, and play once the sound files are in Anki's media folder.

How do I move cards from Anki to Quizlet?

In Anki, choose File > Export, pick the plain-text notes format (.txt) and the deck, and export. Open that file here, choose Quizlet and click Copy. In Quizlet, create a set, click Import and paste: tab and new line are its defaults.

Which Anki versions open the file?

Any desktop Anki. Version 2.1.54 and later read the header lines at the top of the file and set the separator, note type and deck for you. Older versions skip those lines and import it as a plain tab-separated file.

What does "Both directions" do?

It sets the note type to "Basic (and reversed card)", so Anki makes two cards from each line: word to translation, and translation to word.

Is my list uploaded anywhere?

No. The converter is a script running in this page, so the list and any file you open stay on your device. Only if you press the button to hear the cards does the list travel, inside the link, to the Speecho app.
