## Hear the difference

The same Slovak sentence, twice. Andrej is a Slovak speaker; Zoe reads the letters she knows, guesses at the rest and puts English stress on the wrong syllable of almost every word.

Andrej - native Slovak

Zoe - universal voice

All 8 run on the ElevenLabs tiers: Enhanced at 110 credits / 1,000 characters (≈ $0.23 per minute of speech) and Premium at 160 (≈ $0.33) for the most natural result. The Standard tier reads Slovak too at 50 credits, and for most languages it has native voices of its own. Every clip downloads as MP3. ## Why a native Slovak voice matters

Slovak stresses the first syllable of every word and marks vowel length in the spelling: á, é, í, ó, ú and ý are held long, and so are ŕ and ĺ, consonants that Slovak uses as the core of a syllable - vŕba, the willow, stĺp, the pillar. The rhythmic law keeps two long syllables from following each other, which is why Slovak writes krásny where Czech writes krásný, and a voice that holds both syllables long sounds wrong to a Slovak ear.

The letters Czech does not have are the other test. ô is the diphthong uo, as in kôň, the horse; ia, ie and iu glide as one syllable, as in piatok and mlieko; ľ is a soft l, as in ľúbiť; and ä in mäso is read as an open e in standard speech. There is no ř. A Czech voice reading Slovak misses exactly these, and a Slovak listener notices. All eight voices are Slovak speakers; Alex, Ingrid and Jaro speak with a central Slovak base, the one the standard language is built on, and Ivana is from the west. Andrej is balanced and airy and the most used Slovak voice in the library, Alex warm and trustworthy, Luki lively and deep for podcasts, Jaro neutral for explainers. Among the women, Julia is young and soft, Jolana calm and pleasant for narration, Ingrid a steady storyteller, Ivana positive and even for learning content.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I use a Czech voice for Slovak text?**

Not if Slovak listeners will hear it. The languages are close, but a Czech voice reads ô, ľ, the diphthongs and the long syllables by Czech habit, which a Slovak hears at once. These eight are Slovak speakers.

**Does it read ô, ľ and the diphthongs right?**

Yes. kôň, ľúbiť, piatok and mlieko come out the way a Slovak says them, the diphthongs as one syllable and ľ soft.

**What about long syllables and stress?**

Both follow Slovak rules: the stress stays on the first syllable however long the word, and long vowels and the syllabic ŕ and ĺ of vŕba and stĺp are held for their full length.

**How much does Slovak text to speech cost?**

Native voices cost 110 credits per 1,000 characters on Enhanced or 160 on Premium. A 1,000-character paragraph is roughly a minute of speech - about $0.23 on Enhanced at the $5 pack rate. No subscription.
