# Talk face to face in two languages.

Pick two languages and put the phone between you. Speecho shows each person the other's words in their own language, on their half of the screen. When you finish, the whole conversation is saved in both languages. 60 languages, no app to install, billed by the second.

## One phone, two people, two languages

The top half turns to the person across the table. Each of you reads your own words as you said them, and the other's words translated.

Español

La calefacción no funciona desde el lunes.

Lo siento. Mañana viene el técnico a las diez.

A las diez está bien. ¿Estará usted allí?

Sí, yo le abro la puerta.

Speak anytime

English

The heating has not worked since Monday.

I'm sorry. The technician is coming tomorrow at ten.

Ten is fine. Will you be there?

Yes, I'll open the door for you.

1. **Pick the two languages.** Yours and theirs, from 60. Swap them with one tap if you hand the phone over.
2. **Put the phone between you.** On a phone the top half faces the other person; on a laptop or a tablet the two halves sit side by side. The screen stays on.
3. **Talk in turns.** The app tells who is speaking by the language and shows each sentence to the other person in their language, the newest one large.
4. **Keep it.** When you press End, the conversation is saved, in both languages.

## For conversations you need to keep

Where what was said matters later, not just in the moment.

### Renting and repairs

A landlord or a caretaker who speaks another language, and an agreement you only half understood.

**Now:** both of you read the whole talk, and the date and time you agreed on stay in writing.

### At the doctor's

Symptoms explained with gestures, instructions you have to remember on the way out.

**Now:** each side reads the other in their own language, and the instructions are saved to read again at home.

### School and parents' meetings

A teacher and a parent without a shared language, and a child asked to interpret.

**Now:** the adults talk directly, and the notes from the meeting come with it.

### Volunteers and help desks

Aid centres, refugee support and charity desks rely on whoever happens to speak the language.

**Now:** any volunteer can hold the conversation, in 60 languages, with a record for the case file.

### Contractors and service visits

A builder, a plumber or a client who speaks another language, and a quote agreed by nodding.

**Now:** what was promised, and for how much, is there in both languages.

### Travel, the longer talks

Phone apps are fine for a menu; a long talk at a rental desk or a pharmacy needs more.

**Now:** hands-free for as long as it takes, in the browser you already have.

## Hands-free, or hold to talk

Two ways to take turns. Pick one before you start.

### Hands-free

Just talk. The app tells who is speaking by the language, so nobody has to touch the phone. Best for a quiet room and two clearly different languages, like English and Arabic or German and Vietnamese.

### Hold to talk

Each side gets its own button: hold it while you speak, let go and the translation follows. The button, not the recognition, decides the language, which is what you want in a noisy place or between close languages like Spanish and Portuguese, or Ukrainian and Russian.

## After you press End

The conversation is a saved record, not a screen that disappears.

- **Both languages.** Finished conversations are listed in the Conversation section of the app, readable in either language.
- **Export and share.** Download it as text, Word or subtitles, or share a link, like any transcript.
- **Summary and questions.** Ask for a summary or ask the record what was agreed.
- **Continue later.** Pick the same conversation up again, or merge several talks of the same pair into one.
- **Names and terms.** The glossary of your account helps with names, and can set how a term is translated in each language.
- **Audio only if you ask.** The recording is not kept unless you turn on Keep audio before you start.

## Three live modes, three jobs

Conversation is for two people who need each other. The other two are for one speaker and an audience.

| | [Live subtitles](https://speecho.app/live-subtitles/) | [Live interpreter](https://speecho.app/live-interpreter/) | Conversation |
| - | - | - | - |
| Who speaks | One speaker, or a whole room | One speaker, or a call or video in a tab | Two people, taking turns |
| What others get | Subtitles, live, in one language | A natural voice and the text, in one language | Each reads the other in their own language |
| Direction | One way | One way | Both ways |
| Where they read | Your screen, or up to 20 phones by link | Up to 20 phones by QR code, with headphones | One phone between you, a half each |
| Afterwards | A transcript in your history | A transcript in your history | The conversation in both languages |

## Already have a translator app?

Keep it for directions and menus: free phone apps translate a short exchange well. Speecho is for the talks that run longer and matter later: hands-free for as long as it takes, nothing to install, and a record of both sides when you finish, with a summary if you want one.

## What to expect

- **Distance.** It works best with the phone on the table between you, half a metre to a metre from each person.
- **Noise.** In a loud café, hold to talk keeps the turns apart.
- **Short replies.** A lone "OK" or "Sí" can land on the wrong half in hands-free mode; hold to talk avoids it.
- **Voice is optional.** Turn on "Speak the translation aloud" and each turn is read to the other person in their language, at 40 credits a minute instead of 10. Without headphones the microphone pauses while a translation plays.
- **One phone.** Both of you read the same screen; a second phone for the other person is not there yet.
- **Online.** It needs an internet connection: recognition and translation run on our speech provider's servers.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do we need two phones?**

No. One phone lies between you and the top half of the screen turns to face the other person. On a laptop or a tablet the two halves sit side by side. Each of you reads your own words as you said them, and the other person's words translated.

**Which languages can we use?**

Any two of 60, among them English, Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian, Polish, German, Vietnamese, Chinese, Turkish and Hindi. In hands-free mode the app tells who is speaking by the language; for close languages such as Spanish and Portuguese, use hold to talk.

**What if our languages sound alike?**

Use hold to talk. Each side has its own button, and the button decides the language, so Ukrainian and Russian, or Spanish and Portuguese, never end up on the wrong half.

**Is the conversation saved?**

Yes. When you press End it is listed in the Conversation section of the app, in both languages, and you can export it, share it, summarize it or continue it later. The audio is not kept unless you turn on Keep audio before you start.

**How much does it cost?**

The same as live subtitles: 10 credits a minute, billed by the second from your pay-as-you-go balance, which is $0.83 to $1.25 an hour depending on the pack. Confirming your email gives 15 free minutes. No subscription. With the translation read aloud it is 40 credits a minute.

**Does it speak the translation aloud?**

Yes, when you turn on "Speak the translation aloud" before you start: each turn is then read to the other person in their language, in a voice you pick for each of the two. With voice a conversation costs 40 credits a minute instead of 10. Left off, the translation is shown as text, large, on the other person's half.

**Can it get names and terms right?**

Yes, with the glossary of your account: add names and terms once, and translations of terms for each of your two languages. The conversation uses them from the first sentence.

**Do I need to install anything?**

No. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and laptops, and the screen stays on while you talk. It needs a microphone and an internet connection.
