# How to transcribe a meeting without a bot joining the call

> You don't need a notetaker bot in your Zoom, Meet or Teams call to get a transcript. Record locally, upload, and get labelled notes - privately, with nobody the wiser.

Meeting-notetaker bots work, but they come with a cost: a stranger named "Otter" or "Fireflies" pops into the call, everyone sees it recording, and your conversation is now flowing through a third-party bot's account. For a client pitch, a sensitive 1:1 or a candidate interview, that's often the wrong trade. Here's how to get a clean, labelled transcript **without** a bot in the room.

## Why skip the bot

- **No awkward guest.** Nobody has to consent to, or wonder about, an unfamiliar bot in the participant list.
- **You control the recording.** The file stays yours from the start instead of living in a bot vendor's cloud.
- **It works anywhere.** In-person meetings, phone calls and workshops have no "call" for a bot to join - local recording covers all of them.

## The workflow

The trick is to separate **recording** from **transcribing**. Capture the audio however is easiest, then hand the file to an AI transcriber afterwards.

1. **Record the call locally.** Zoom, Google Meet and Teams all have a built-in "Record" button that saves an MP4/M4A to your device or cloud. For in-person meetings, your phone's voice recorder is plenty.
2. **Grab the file** - the video or audio export from the platform, or the voice memo from your phone.
3. **Upload it to Speecho.** Video works directly; the audio is extracted in your browser so even a long recording uploads fast.
4. **Turn on speaker identification** before you start, so the transcript comes back as "Speaker 1 / Speaker 2" dialogue instead of one block.
5. **Get your notes.** One click produces an AI summary with key points and action items - and you can generate a ready-to-send follow-up email straight from the transcript.

## A note on consent

Skipping the bot doesn't skip the etiquette. Recording laws vary by region, and some require all parties to agree. "I'm going to record this so I can take proper notes - any objection?" takes five seconds and keeps you on the right side of both the law and the room. The difference is that *you* decide when and how, rather than a bot announcing it for you.

## Why it's cheaper too

Bot-based notetakers are subscription products - $10–$20 a month, every month, used or not. If your meeting load is uneven, pay-as-you-go is simply cheaper: a one-hour call costs about a dollar to transcribe, and with Speecho **credits never expire**, so a quiet month costs you nothing. See the [pricing](/pricing/) for the exact per-hour math.

## Live captions inside the call, still no bot

If you also want live captions inside the call itself, Speecho can send them into Zoom's own captions while live subtitles run in a browser tab: you paste the caption API token from the meeting, and nothing joins the call.
